Bristol | Going to new heights

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta

I know that I am totally biased when it comes to my home town of Bristol because I really am a champion for the city. It is diverse, cultural and vibrant. It has so many amazing events, which I'm sure other city's do have and do well, but Bristol always seems to play the trump card.

This year I am breaking the rules. I am away for one of my favourite events of the year and I'm actually pretty gutted. The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is always top of my list of Bristol events not to miss along with the Harbour Festival and countless gin, cheese and rum festivals, but this year I am missing it so I thought I would share some of my many (read: thousands and thousands) of pictures from previous years of the event. As you can probably tell from my hair colour, the images of my balloon flight were from a little time ago, but you know if anyone has a balloon and fancies taking me up next year then my email address is on the About Me page, and I would probably love you forever. If anyone ever has the opportunity to go up in a Balloon then I thoroughly advise you do it, it's magical.

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is the largest annual meeting of hot air balloons in Europe, see I told you we played the trump card, and to top it all of the Fiesta is free. Balloons travel from all over the globe to exhibit typically with over a hundred taking part in the events. The fiesta runs from Thursday 10th August this year until Sunday, meaning that the activities have already started.

There are multiple mass balloon launches across the weekend, typically early morning and early evening, with certain days having special shapes taking place too. On the Thursday and Saturday nights a spectacular balloon glow takes place where balloons light up in time to a medley of music which is guaranteed to get your singing and dancing. The glows are then followed by a firework finale. It's not to be missed. Other events which take place over the weekend are model hot air ballooning competitions, air craft fly-bys and so much more.

If you're in the area or looking for a weekend adventure I recommend you get on down to the Fiesta at Ashton Court in Bristol. I normally go twice each year, although this year I am on holiday in Devon.
